Australian-born photographer Ward Roberts has a fascination with architecture, finding intrigue in the colors and design. “Architecture has always interested me when traveling to a new location, it’s what I tend to focus on first,” he says.

In his series Billions, he brings to life the intense chaos of a city by drawing the viewer into the complexity of the urban environment, in this case Hong Kong. Lifting us high above the streets, he creates infinite reflections of light, patterns, and shapes to create a sense of confusion about the space. Interestingly, Roberts is able to portray the energy of this rapidly growing city without the presence of a single person. As he says, “I have found that having people in the image doesn’t work into this pursuit to capture architectural perfection, as their behavior is unpredictable.”
